On Wednesday evening 11th April 2018 in a packed room in The City of Derry Hotel, the first evening of the NIC-ICTU Biennial Delegate Conference, Owen McGonagle’s comprehensive book on his father was launched by Umiskin Press Principal, Dr Jack McGinley. ICTU Deputy General Secretary Owen Reidy introduced the event; there was an engaging talk by Francis Devine, labour tutor and historian, on both the book and his many interactions with Stephen; a thank you from Owen McGonagle; and, from the floor, William McCarter – formerly McCarters/Fruit of the Loom – paid testament to Stephen, his dealings and the honesty and integrity of the official and his union (ITGWU) and how once a deal was done it was honoured on both sides.
The Dublin launch was held on Thursday 18th April in the Cois Life Bar, Liberty Hall Theatre. A select audience heard from Jack McGinley; Joe O’Flynn, General Secretary of SIPTU; Ruairi Quinn, former leader of the Labour Party and author of the Foreword; and Owen McGonagle.
The Press was very sorry to hear of the death, on Friday 30th December 2022, of the author, Owen McGonagle. May he rest in peace. |
